So because it is so difficult to learn how to fly a quadcopter I will always recommend that a beginner buy a small quadcopter toy before dropping $450 on a DJI Phantom for example. There are a couple good little quadcopter toys out there but my favorite is the Syma X1 Quadcopter. It comes in a few different configurations you can get a space ship bumblebee or UFO. It comes with everything you need to fly for just about $30. That includes a 2.4 GHz transmitter so you can fly indoors and outdoors with a pretty good range. It also means that you can fly more than a couple of these guys around. It can also do flips in any direction at the touch of a button! One important thing to note is how to calibrate it. A lot of people think that their quadcopter is broken because after they plug in the battery and try to fly it it will always veer off in one direction. This is because when they plugged it in it wasnt on level ground when it calibrated the gyros. So what the flight controller thinks is level really isnt level. So what you have to do is plug in the battery then immediately place it on a flat surface so it can calibrate correctly. Then you are ready to go!
Fourth you will need a battery to power all the electronics. Lithium Polymer (LiPo) batteries are the most popular batteries for the RC hobby. LiPo batteries are characterized by their number of cells (voltage) and capacity (mAh). Each LiPo cell has 3.7V so a 1S (1 cell) battery will be 3.7V a 2S battery will be 7.4V 3S 11.1 V and so forth. Capacity is rated in milliamp hours (mAh). The higher the number of mAh the longer the battery can power the quadcopter. Lastly you will need a frame to put all this onto. There are many commercially available quadcopter frames. Some are in the + configuration which means one of the arms acts as the "forward" orientation. Some are in the X configuration which means that "forward" is between two of the arms. There is also the H frame where forward is on the flat side of the H. H frame is great for FPV and aerial photography since the rotors are out of the way.
A GoPro quadcopter should have a reasonably long battery life to be able to last through aerial shots and to provide longer flights thus more footage. Getting an overly expensive model doesnt always mean better value for money. There are cheaper models that outdo some really expensive ones. The important thing is to look for features that fall within a reasonable price range. Choice should be largely influenced by price and the features that will suit ones need. A GoPro quadcopter that is way below the average price range isnt such a wise buy either. It should be compatible with the most recent GoPro models to enable easier mounting and to ensure protection of the camera. Compatibility reduces worry and the need to do any minor adjustments. It should have extra features like integrated GPS functions USB ports that are built in propellers to help in the prevention of crashes and effective distance control of up to 300 meters.
This is a very good thing due to the geometry and weight distribution that Quadcopters have. Lower weight means more payload less fuel and/or longer range. Perhaps the weight savings of lube oil (2-types needed in normal current helicopter technology) on each of the four motors could also give weight space for electromagnetic bearings with a thrust bearing combination around the outer ring on the rotorblades to control vibration and free-wheel free of drag and easy start. If the motors happen to be electric even better in this case. If high speed gas turbines we save weight and add safety to a nearly maintenance free design. Some of the NASA tests have concluded 60000 hours with no damage or need to replace parts or bearings. For a rotorcraft this is nearly unheard of due to the harsh environment they fly and the fact that the motors are under so significant load all the time the aircraft is airborne.
