The two main competitors are Parrot who have now released the 2.0 version of their AR Drone for amateurs and DJI Phantom which priced at over $1000 is for the more serious players in the drone arena. The AR Drone is priced at about $300 and up depending on whether you opt to go for any extra features such as GPS based auto-pilot an extra battery or extra memory in the form of a USB plug-in stick. This makes it more affordable and it would not surprise me if it becomes one of the top Christmas gifts this year!
Unfortunately all cannot be placed in the same category and those who does not feel compassionate about the animals in the wild are called poachers among us. A study has pointed out that nearly 25000 elephants laid down their lives in the African wild while nearly 1200 rhinos were slayed in South Africa. Killings on this scale only last year are not uncommon and the numbers are alarmingly on the rise. Though preventive measures are taken conservationists have not been too successful in stopping the illegal hunters. Thankfully where human measures have failed technology has come forward to at least try and put a stop to this. Poachers can meet their nemesis in what is called drones like the DJI Phantom 2.
Say youre a beginner; you watched a few drone videos and are all excited about being able to fly it around your city and take pictures from perspectives and angles you could not access before. One of the most important features nowadays is the ability to film high definition video; if you wish to display your drone video art to friends then this is essential. The good news is that HD video cameras have become cheaper and cheaper nowadays and both the Parrot AR Drone and the DJI Phantom have them. As previously mentioned GPS is optional for the AR Drone and can be had by buying a flight recorder for about $140 off Amazon.
Since it is for the wild a drone too big in size will be hard to handle in the absence of landing point and runway. The best bet is to go for something smaller in size that would be easy to carry around and has a smaller launching time. Those who had been dealing in drones and has the experience of handling the kinds like the much celebrated DJI Phantom 2 will point out that drones since meant to undertake long flying hours and cover large distances are best purchased when they can be operated either autonomously or via remote control.
