Lets talk about the two most common methods to get into the quadcopter fad. Initially we will cover the popular micro or toy grade models and then we will discuss possible upgrade models like the DJI Phantom and other popular hobby class quadcopters and drones. Another way to discover quad flight is to acquire a micro quad. These are little quads that look and act the same method that larger quads do. They are actually amazing little machines. The benefit of discovering with a micro quad is that they have such low mass therefore little power driving their small propellers that they are really unlikely to cause any damage when you smack them into something.
The Phantom Vision takes it a step further providing a first person vision (FPV) experience by streaming live video from the attached HD 1080p camera via WiFi to your tablet or smart phone. The transmitter has a stand for attaching your device so that you can watch where you are flying. The camera is pretty good. Not as good as a GoPro but it does record in 1080p and has a 14MP camera. Its field of view can be changed between 140/120/90 degrees. It can also take photos in RAW format which is one improvement over the GoPro.
There are plenty of different drones in the marketplace but one of the best I have piloted is the DJI Phantom 3 Professional. Capable of 4K ultra-high definition video this drone also produces live streams video to iOS and Android devices so that the pilot can see exactly what the drone is seeing. The really unique feature about this particular model is the presence of Vision Positioning system which allows for stable and predictable flight whenever a GPS signal is not available. Of course outside with GPS reception this drone is capable of automatic landings and takeoffs and built-in programming of no-fly zones.
Also such remote controlled drones are more befitting the environment in which they will be deployed. The new released DJI Phantom 2 is all equipped with a new remote control with great features like a gimbal control dial trainer port built-in rechargeable LiPo battery with a capacity of 2000mAh battery level LED indicators and throttle locking feature that holds the throttle stick in place when descending. Just letting the drone hover around however is not the end of the affair. A monitoring also is necessary which is done from a ground station.
