Second you will need a flight control board. This is the brains of the quadcopter. It controls how the motors work. When choosing your flight control board it is important to remember that not all flight control boards are created equal. Some are extremely sophisticated and capable of numerous functions such as GPS mission planning return to home and loiter modes. Choose your flight control board based only on what you really need when you are just getting started you will not need all the bells and whistles. Third you will need the motors and electronics speed controllers (ESC). The ESCs interface with the flight control board which receives commands from the receiver. The flight control board calculates what the motors need to do to make the quadcopter do what the user is telling it to do then tells the ESCs which in turn tell motors how to spin.
I knew that choosing the flight controller needed to come next. After all quadcopters replace mechanical parts with gyros. If you think about it it is really just like a computer game! Im a terrible helicopter pilot. I can barely control a coaxial beginners helicopter. Being able to use a flight controller was a big part of the appeal of a multirotor platform. The simpler flight controllers only have angular rate of turn sensors. These sensors are what we call gyros. They can sense when you are turning but that is all. A feature that I really wanted the flight controller to have was accelerometers. An accelerometer can tell in which direction is down by measuring the acceleration due to gravity. With this auto leveling feature I can let go of the control sticks when I get into trouble and it will bring it back to perfectly level attitude. This was very important to me!
So in a quadcopter each of the motors are configured such that they cancel one of the others out. So when you want to yaw (turn right or left) then two motors across from each other diagonally will reduce their speed and the other two across from each other will increase theirs. This maintains the lift necessary to maintain altitude but imparts angular torque to the aircraft which makes it turn. Now it would be impossible for a human to calculate exactly how much change in RPM to impart to a quadctopers individual motors to maintain control so these calculations are carried out by a flight control board. This board is usually equipped with pyrometers and sometimes accelerometers. It has software that controls the motors based on the position of the aircraft and user inputs from the transmitter.
When you take delivery of your first Quadcopter see to it you also look for a Flying Quadcopters Drones and UAVs Tip sheet. Suggestion sheets will enable you to fly your craft securely and confidently. You will also find directions on how you can set up your model. We also strongly advise that you read the manual a number of times so you become familar with the functionality of your model and the remote control transmitter. When learning to fly always fly slow and fly low to start with and never fly in close proximity to people. However small your craft is the propellers spin at a very high speed and can cause injury. If flying outdoors make sure you keep the sun behind you and fly at eye level. Many of the Micro and Nano Quadcopter can perform acrobatics but dont try these tricks until you are totally in control of your model and have perfected the basic flying skills.
