Drones can put a stop to the heinous act of killing helpless animals. These are the hawk eye needed in the blue to allow rangers locate and nab the poachers red handed. Drones like DJI Phantom 2 have been very fruitful commercially. In the hands of filmmakers the aerial photography drones have been successful in capturing the world beneath as never before. However when it concerns deployment of the same for the purpose of catching poachers some specialized technology is required. Say for example the compactness.
The two main competitors are Parrot who have now released the 2.0 version of their AR Drone for amateurs and DJI Phantom which priced at over $1000 is for the more serious players in the drone arena. The AR Drone is priced at about $300 and up depending on whether you opt to go for any extra features such as GPS based auto-pilot an extra battery or extra memory in the form of a USB plug-in stick. This makes it more affordable and it would not surprise me if it becomes one of the top Christmas gifts this year!
The Phantom Vision takes it a step further providing a first person vision (FPV) experience by streaming live video from the attached HD 1080p camera via WiFi to your tablet or smart phone. The transmitter has a stand for attaching your device so that you can watch where you are flying. The camera is pretty good. Not as good as a GoPro but it does record in 1080p and has a 14MP camera. Its field of view can be changed between 140/120/90 degrees. It can also take photos in RAW format which is one improvement over the GoPro.
The device app enables you to change settings while the DJI Phantom Vision is still in the air. You can change the ISO white balance set a time interval for photos. The app also display altitude speed and distance from home. A compass is also used to help you know which way is back home and if you do get in trouble and crash the Phantom will send out its last known GPS coordinates so that you can recover it. The transmitter has changed to work on 5.8GHz and the WiFi works on 2.4GHz. The distance is advertised to be up to 300m. The battery integration is greatly improved and the Vision looks much more streamlined. The 5200 mAh LiPo batteries provide up to 25 minutes of flight time.
