The following is an over-simplified tutorial. If you dont already know what youre doing then you will be better off just hiring a pro. If you decide that you want to tackle stretching your own carpet I suggest that you take your time use your head keep your blades sharp dont try to just kick it tight with a knee kicker and most of all be careful. The first step is to empty the room of furniture. If you really know what youre doing then you can probably work around some furniture but if youre a novice I suggest that you do yourself a favor and empty the room. Remove any metal strips that will be in the way. Some flat metal strips need to have nails removed. Another type of metal strip is called a clamp down metal. To free the carpet from the clamp down metal pry it open (just a little bit) with a flat chisel or a stair tool. There are too many different types of metal strips to describe here so youll just have to figure it out.
When you begin to shop for carpet bring a detailed description of the room where it will be installed. How much foot traffic will there be? Are there outdoor entry points? Does the room get direct sunlight? Do you have pets? Will this room be used regularly by children? Knowing these answers will make it easier to work with a carpet professional to be sure you purchase carpeting that is best suited to your needs.Color: The color of the carpeting can really set the mood for a room; from elegant to cozy and even dramatic. Lighter neutral colors give a feeling of openness and space and work well with bold colored furnishings walls and accessories. For a warm cozy feel more color in the carpet may be something to consider.
When it comes to vacuuming invest in a good quality vacuum cleaner. In the long run it will save you money on two fronts: your carpets will last longer and you will get more years use from your vacuum. A good vacuum cleaner also removes more dust and allergens from carpeting and keeps the air cleaner as well. To maximize the life of your carpeting you should have it professionally cleaned once or twice a year. Vacuuming alone cant provide the required deep cleaning your carpeting needs. Of course its important to clean spills as soon as possible but over time they will leave their mark. Even home carpet shampoo machines have limitations. Its common for do-it-yourselfers to not get cleaning agents completely rinsed and removed. That residual detergent leaves a bit of a film on carpet that actually attracts dirt resulting in carpets being soiled and stained sooner.
Getting a good quality carpet steam cleaner is essential to the cleaning process. Make sure you have one that is of good construction. It is very frustrating to keep fixing a machine that keeps breaking down throughout the process of trying to get the carpets clean. A good carpet steam cleaner should also provide enough suction to pick up most of the water put down in the process. Your carpeting should be damp not wet when the entire cleaning process is done. If your carpets are wet it will take a very long time to dry and it is also an indicator that the carpeting is not as clean as it could probably be. The last thing to look at is the scrubbing action. Most new models of a carpet steam cleaner either use a rotating roller scrub brush or spinning scrubbers. I believe either is good but I prefer the spinning brushes because they seem a little easier to remove for cleaning. If you have pets that shed you will probably be cleaning them several times throughout the project.
