Once youre familiar with how your carpet is constructed its easier to envision how patching works even if youve never done it before. These are the basics of your carpets anatomy and should help you in assessing how far down the damage has gone which is an important step in carpet repair and carpet patching. If you dont have any leftover carpet from the installation we may be able to steal some carpet from a closet beneath a radiator or from under a piece of furniture that you never move. (Now youll never move it for sure.) If your carpet is a relatively common style a nearby retailer may have a perfect or near-perfect match that you can purchase. (The chances of finding a perfect match are somewhere between slim and none.) If you need to patch a significant area that matches the rest of the house (such as several steps in a stairway or a hallway one great carpet patching alternative is to re-appropriate matching carpet from another room such as a bedroom. Re-carpeting just that one bedroom means the hallway/stairway still matches the rest of the house and costs a LOT less money than replacing the carpet for whole common area.
The reality is quite different. Carpet padding is the first line of defense in extending the life of carpet. Of course it gives carpet that nice spring and cushion under your feet but its primary function is to reduce the friction generated by foot steps between a carpets backing and the hard flooring material over which its installed. Without proper padding years on constant grinding and carpet squirm will take years off the life of a carpet. Consult a carpet professional to be sure you select the pad best suited to your application. Use: When you begin looking at carpet samples be clear on where and how the carpet will be used. Not all styles fibers or weaves are well suited to every room.
If you have a stain that you cant get out or you have damaged carpet due to a burn (not the good kind) or your bad dog or cat thinks that carpet is a food group then a patch may be the only solution. Patching isnt as easy as it looks. The patch needs to be exactly perfect. If theres any overlap or gap at the seam (at all) youll be sorry. You can use a leftover piece of carpet from the original installation or steal a piece of carpet from a closet to do your carpet patching. One thing you probably cant do is go to the carpet store and buy a piece to match. A carpet to floor transition is anyplace where the carpet ends and the floor begins. If its at a tile floor we call it a carpet to tile transition.
This process was accomplished with a profusion of soap or detergent and water. When the operator thought that the carpet reached maximum cleanliness the carpet would be very thoroughly flushed with water and then suspended on a rail in the air to dry. Another weighted rail would be on the lower end of the carpet to stretch it back to its original dimensions. When the carpet was completely dry the back was resized to replace the sizing lost in the scrubbing procedure. After this step the carpet all clean and beautiful once again was returned to the owner. It was good for another few years of traffic. Although this cleaning method is still employed today it is probably used to a lesser degree since wall-to-wall carpeting has become popular. Wall-to-wall carpeting cannot be removed to provide it with a thorough scrubbing. Therefore one must resort to a variety of alternative methods to achieve this same end. Basically this consists of three steps: a thorough vacuuming spot cleaning of the surface to be scrubbed and the scrubbing-cleaning operation. The cleaning operation may be performed in a variety of ways generally divided into two classifications: surface cleaning and deep cleaning.
