Knee stretcher. A knee stretcher also known as a kicker is a special tool that has a grip on one end to attach to the carpet and a pad on the other end for you to kick with your quadriceps (do not kick with your knee! Power carpet stretcher. In the trade we usually call this too our stretcher. The stretcher is the most important tool for stretching carpet. Its specially designed to adjust to any size room and help stretch carpet much more effectively than anyone could do by hand (or by knee). A power carpet stretcher features a very long pole with a carpet grip on one end a wall brace on the other and a handle lever in the middle. Dont even try to stretch a carpet without one. This is the most expensive tool most of us carpet people have.
Loose fibers in the carpet- Watch out for loose fibers in the carpet. These can get snagged on the rotating brush roller and rip apart you carpet; or clog and damage the roller on your machine. If you know you have loose fibers in your carpet the easiest solution is to take a scissors and trim off the loose fibers as close to the base of the carpet as possible. This will hopefully prevent any snagging of the fibers on the roller. Have a plan of attack- Planning your route or order of carpets can save some headaches at the end of the project. Carpet cleaning professionals have done this enough times that it becomes second nature but you should plan your route so that you do not need to walk across already cleaned carpeting until it is completely dry.
Few things can make a house feel more inviting or add a dramatic flair to a room than carefully chosen carpeting. Today its something most of us take for granted but that hasnt always been so. Before the 1950s wall to wall carpet was considered an expensive luxury reserved for the wealthy. That all changed with the post-war building boon in the middle of the 20th century. With new advancements in carpet fibers manufacturing methods and an expanding market wall to wall carpeting was suddenly within reach of a growing middle class. Sixty years ago fiber texture pattern and color were limited and vacuum cleaner technology was in its early stages. As a result carpet life was short. Today choices are nearly unlimited. A wide range of price points and carpet exist for nearly every room and application. Even moderately priced carpet can bring years of enjoyment to your home.
From the moment a carpet is installed its beauty and life are on a downhill slide. Unlike dirty resilient tiles or hard floor surfaces carpeting cannot be completely revived. It can be compared with a new car which has a terminal life span. Therefore proper carpet maintenance is the key to the extension of the life of a carpeted floor surface. Before wall-to-wall carpeting became popular cleaning was handled primarily by professional carpet cleaners. The cleaner would pick up the carpet put it in a truck and take it to the shop. At the shop the cleaner would measure the carpet carefully and then place it on a concrete floor to vacuum it thoroughly. The carpet would then be scrubbed with a rotary floor machine equipped with a solution tank and a shower feed brush.
